5 Ways to Enjoy the Holidays Without Destroying Your Health and Fitness Goals

As with any effective routine or habit, your health and fitness needs  to become a part of your lifestyle, rather than a chore. If being active and eating right is just a part of who you are and how you live your life every single day, it will be easier to stick with it over the long-term.

The toughest part of the year seems to be the holidays. With so many parties and visits, activities and dinners, it can be hard to keep up with your health and fitness goals. Here are five ways you can stay on top of your goals and still enjoy every minute of the season!

Make an activities  part of the holiday fun for everyone!

Instead of everyone parking their behinds on the couch all afternoon, watching football, get everyone out to play a  game of touch football. You don’t necessarily have to hit the gym the way you would on a normal day but staying active helps to keep you on track. Advantage? Everyone will come back with more energy feeling like they accomplished something. You might even make some great family memories and perhaps start a new tradition for the annual festivities?

Other holiday activities to consider?

  • Ice skating
  • Skiing or snowshoeing
  • Hiking in the woods or just the local park
  • A group bike ride
  • A yoga session in the living room

Schedule your workouts for right before the BIG EVENTS

You can burn carbs more effectively if you’ve had a decent workout right before eating. So, if you’re trying to figure out the best time to work out, pick the hour or so before you sit down to a big family dinner. This way, you get your workout in, your endorphins up and your metabolism revved up!

Ultimately, a little planning can go a long way to making sure that you don’t drop your habit of workouts just because you’re not living your normal routine for a while. Book workouts into your schedule the same way you will book shopping trips, parties and other holiday festivities. If a workout is on your schedule, you’re less likely to ignore it.

Drink a lot… of water!

Sometimes we think we’re hungry when really, we’re getting a little dehydrated, so before you hit the table, have a tall glass of water. It will fill you up, keep you hydrated and help you to make more sensible food choices. Opt for veggies or some solid protein to fill the gap. If you can, have a healthy snack with water before you attend parties, so that you’re less likely to overeat or drink when you get there.

If you’re drinking alcohol, just make sure you drink a glass of water between each alcoholic beverage. It spaces the drinks out, keeps you hydrated and will help you avoid a regrettable binge!

Don’t deviate from your routine too much!

Humans are, by definition, creatures of habit. If you don’t go too far off your usual routine, you’ll find it that much easier to pick it up again when you get back to it in the New Year. That doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to go to the gym every day, but you should make sure you pack workout clothes if you’re traveling and try and get some sort of physical activity in!

Go for a run, or a speed walk! If you’re staying at a hotel, find one with a gym and maybe even a pool, to shake things up a little! It’s okay to inject a little holiday into your workout routine but do yourself a favor and don’t eliminate it entirely!

Get lots of sleep

Late nights at parties or binge watching your latest favorite series seem great until you find, days later, that your body is fighting you because of a lack of sleep! Sleep is when your body rejuvenates itself: muscles rebuild and repair, your brain de-stresses and you can recuperate from all the fun you’re having.  A lack of proper sleep can leave you reaching for the cakes and cookies, as your body looks for energy sources it couldn’t get from adequate rest. So, make sure you have some early nights mixed in with the party nights, and your body will thank you!

If you’re out of town and can’t get to a FIT36 studio for a workout, regardless of what it is, find a way to can keep your activity level going strong so you can start the New Year out right!
