Can Alcohol Fit in with Your Fitness Goals?

Summers are for BBQs, pool parties and hanging out in the backyard with friends. Maybe you have worked hard to make good food choices and are exercising regularly, but you are not seeing the pounds drop like you were hoping. One majorly overlooked area of healthy living are liquid calories, specifically when it comes to alcohol.

Many alcoholic beverages are full of sugar and high in calories. So, is your only option to abstain from drinking all together? Not necessarily. Here are some quick tips to help you enjoy a good drink while steering clear of the dreaded beer belly.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking water is important when you are consuming alcohol. It helps flush out toxins more quickly as well as it helps you feel full. When you are full, you are less likely to want another drink. Try and make it a goal that for every alcoholic beverage you drink, you drink a full glass of water.

Choose Your Beer Wisely

Beer is one of the worst culprits for tacking on the pounds. It’s tasty, goes down smooth, and before you know it, you’ve had 3 or 4 beers without even realizing it. According to Beer100, the majority of beers contain over 130 calories and some have as many as 24 carbs! Many people choose light beers to try and stay somewhat healthy, but you have to consider if you will drink more before you really feel any affect. If you are wanting to try and find a healthy option that isn’t Light, go for a Guinness or a stout. Stouts have antioxidants and are made with whole grains which are good for overall health.

Fill Up

One of the worst things you can do is to drink alcohol on an empty stomach. Because you are hungry, you will drink more and faster which leads to getting drunk more quickly, which ultimately leads to drinking more. Before you drink an alcoholic beverage, eat a healthy meal or snack packed with protein. A big salad with chicken and cheese. If you aren’t drinking during meal time, make sure you have a good snack or appetizer that is filling. It’s important to eat before you start drinking since once you start drinking, you are more likely to choose an unhealthy food option.

Watch out for Sneaky Sugar

Mixers can be the worst when it comes to calorie and sugar intake. Not only does a single drink pack a huge number of calories, they often taste so good that you don’t stop at just one. Go for the light margarita or use coke zero instead of regular coke if you are mixing it.

The best choice you can make with alcohol is moderation. One drink will always have fewer calories than two. So, have fun with your friends and enjoy the summer, but avoid that beer belly by staying hydrated, reading the labels and pairing your drink with a healthy meal. And if you do wake up and realize you had too much to drink the night before, down a big glass of water and head over to FIT36 to sweat out those toxins and get back on track!
