Olympics – What are you training for? Being your best. Setting milestones and celebrating.

The 2018 Winter Olympic Games are upon us! The elite winter athletes of the world are expected to show us new potential never seen before. These top athletes spend day and night training to be their absolute best. They have a goal in sight and certainly know what they are training for. While you may not be an elite winter games athlete, it’s extremely important to know what you’re training for. The most popular New Year’s Resolution is to lose weight, and it’s that time of year when people start to lose focus. Often times, people struggle with staying motivated because they haven’t quite identified a realistic goal.

So, what are you training for? Everyone’s fitness journey is different, but if you want to see any kind of results, it’s important to set realistic goals and milestones for yourself. If you’re just starting your fitness journey, it’s ok to start small:

  • Focus on losing a pound at a time. Once you lose that first pound, you know you’re headed in the right direction (just don’t celebrate too much). Make sure to set clear and reasonable goals for weight, BMI, performance and endurance. This makes it easier to track when you’re hitting your milestones

  • Start packing your lunch and bring it in to work instead of going out to get fast food. Maybe even start packing your lunch just a couple days a week. You’ll quickly realize that it’s actually pretty good and you can save some money too!

  • Pick a reasonable amount of weekly exercise and stick to it. If realistically, you can only commit to three days a week of physically activity, that’s ok! It’s important to set reasonable expectations for yourself so you don’t end up giving up on your fitness goals

  • Pick workouts that you know you’ll enjoy doing. Maybe you like lifting with a group, or playing basketball with friends or even swimming! Fit these fun activities into your workout schedule.

  • Pick a fitness goal for yourself. Maybe you’ve always been wanting to run or walk a mile. Start training for it! Perhaps you have been thinking about participating in an obstacle race. Have you always wanted to be able to do a pull up? Make a fitness bucket list and include activities that will require you to focus and improve upon your physical capabilities.

By creating measurable and attainable goals for yourself, it’s much easier to track your progress and give yourself the recognition you deserve. Changing your lifestyle is hard, and it’s important to celebrate the achievements you make no matter the size of the achievement!

What’s the best way to reward yourself for running your first marathon, losing weight or exercising more consistently?

Food rewards aren’t recommended. Rewarding ourselves with food can lead to unhealthy habits and derail us from hitting our fitness goals. So, what’s a more tangible reward?

  • Get yourself some new clothes. Maybe you need some new workout gear! They say, when you look good, you feel good. It’s time to reward yourself!

  • Is there a concert coming up that you’d like to attend? A great reward for hitting a fitness milestone could be purchasing concert tickets!

  • Perhaps you hit a big milestone. What about taking a vacation to celebrate?

  • Treat yourself to a spa day. Time for some relaxation!

Even if we can’t be an elite Olympic athlete, we can be inspired by them. They know what they want to accomplish and stick to their goals. Focus on being the best you by setting realistic goals and milestones for yourself and celebrate your successes along the way. This will ensure that you stay motivated and inspired throughout your fitness journey!
