A Stronger, More Fit You This Spring

A Stronger, More Fit You This Spring

Finally, Spring has arrived! You’ve gotten used to hiding under those bulky coats and sweaters, but soon you’ll be pulling out those shorts, sundresses and sleeveless shirts that have been hiding in the back of your closet! Is your body summer ready?

Springtime provides us the opportunity to get outside, get some sun and get more active. It’s a time for renewal, a fresh start, and new growth. Now is the perfect time to spring into the new season feeling inspired to break down barriers and finally make fitness a way of life.

We all know exercise has its many benefits, both physically and mentally. If exercise has fallen by the wayside for you as the weather cooled down, that’s ok. Springtime provides the perfect opportunity to set some new fitness goals. When setting your fitness goals, be specific and make them measurable. Your goals should be SMART: Specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, timely. Pick a goal like running a 10k by June and decide how you will accomplish that goal by identifying smaller, more measurable goals. This will allow you to stay on track and your fitness goals won’t seem as daunting.

Winter weather tends to make us want to stay inside and sit for longer periods of time, and with the amount of time most of us spend sitting and working inside already, it’s time to get moving. While we love our high intensity interval training time, we also know that light to moderate intensity workouts can offer many health benefits.

With more hours of daylight and warmer temperatures, here are just a few ways you can take advantage of the great outdoors:

  • A Lunchtime Walk
The temptation may be to sit at our desks while we eat lunch and promise ourselves to workout after work, but it’s time to break that habit. Grab a quick and healthy lunch and then get outside for a walk or a run. Grab a few co-workers and even power-walk around your building a few times. You will find that you have more energy to finish your day.
  • Get Your Ride On
Depending on your commute distance to work, try parking your car and taking your bike to work. You’ll feel great knowing that you got your heart pumping, increased your metabolism and strengthened your heart before you even started your work day
  • Plant a garden
Did you know that you can burn 200-300 calories an hour gardening? Gardening is a great form of exercise and for an added bonus you’ll have more fresh, organic vegetables to eat!
  • Take a hike
If you are hearing your inner voice calling you to a new adventure, get out and take a hike. Whether you visit one of your local parks or get out to explore new trails, hiking gives you a great workout and rejuvenates your soul at the same time.
  • Go the distance
Whether it’s on your bucket list to do a 5k, 10k or perhaps a 25-mile trail run, get a friend or a few friends and commit to a distance run this spring.  Having an upcoming race or event will give you something to work towards and keep you motivated!

Combine these less strenuous activities with activities that get your heart rate up (like doing a HIIT class at Fit36 and you’ll be building a stronger, more fit you for spring. Start today and use the new season, a time of renewal and new growth, to increase your motivation!
