Summer is such a sweet season…literally. This is the time of year that we can find healthy seasonal fruits, light and satisfying bites, as well as sugary daiquiris and ice-cream, just about everywhere we turn.
Like any other time of year, it’s important to prepare and have healthy options at hand when that summer snack attack hits. We’ve got some great sweet and savory options to try this summer.
To satisfy the sweet tooth:
Fruit Kabobs. Take your favorite seasonal fruits and cut them up into small chunks. Place a skewer through and enjoy a couple of them for a snack that stays under 100 calories.
Cherries. It is a summer favorite and knowing it is packed with vitamins A and C, along with lots of fiber and potassium, you can throw a cup into your lunch, your hiking pack or just to keep at your desk during the day. (1 cup is only 90 calories.)
Frozen Dark Chocolate Chips
If nothing will satisfy until you have chocolate, grab a few dark chocolate chips (1/4 cup has approximately 70 calories). After all, dark chocolate has been proven to improve cholesterol and is a healthy brain food!
Frozen Grapes. Keep a bag of purple grapes in your freezer for a quick and cool summer treat. (A 1-cup serving of the fruit has just 62 calories!)
Homemade Sorbet. Simply take your favorite fruits, like strawberries or watermelon and blend with a little lime juice and a few tablespoons of water. Pour it into a plastic storage container and place in the freezer for a few hours for an afternoon or evening treat.
If you’ve got to satisfy that savory or salty craving:
Guacamole Bites. Smash an avocado and mix in some salsa. Add 2 tablespoons to a few whole wheat crackers for a delicious and healthy snack that stays under 100 calories.
Hard-Boiled Eggs. Boil a dozen on your prep day and keep them in the fridge for an easy to take and go snack. Eggs are packed with B vitamins and vitamin D. (One egg is only 70 calories and contains healthy fats and “high-quality” protein.)
Hummus and Celery. This low-calorie snack is a great plant-based option packed with protein, fiber, and the celery contains fiber and potassium. (1 tablespoon of hummus is around 25 calories and celery has a mere 6 calories per stalk.)
If you’re looking for a couple drink options to cool you down but not tip the calorie scale try these:
Iced Cappuccino. Pass on the sugary, calorie-laden frozen coffee drinks and simply order an iced cappuccino with skim milk. If you make an iced coffee at home, you can prevent the ice from watering your drink down by freezing some coffee cubes ahead of time.
Sparkling Pomegranate Refresher. Simply mix sparkling water with a splash of pomegranate juice and a few pomegranate seeds. This beautiful summer refresher is under 35 calories.
So as the temperatures rise, forego the sugary sweets for these delicious options and you can survive the summer without throwing away your healthy habits.
