Recommitting to Your New Year’s Resolutions

It happens to even the most committed person, every year. You start with lofty goals and solid resolutions but by February, you’re already waning. If you want to start the new year out right this coming January, it’s time to recommit to your existing resolutions. Busy lives make it hard sometimes to stay on track, but there are some easy ways you can get back to them, even if you’ve gone off the rails a little (or a lot)!

 

Start as you mean to finish

This one is easy! Re-visit your resolutions, within the context of your personal and work schedules, and see if they are realistic. It’s one thing to be ambitious, but dropping from exhaustion and over-extending yourself isn’t healthy.

 

Take an honest look at what you’re trying to accomplish, ask yourself why these resolutions are important to you, and prioritize them. By doing this, you’ll find it easier to both manage and reach goals you set out for yourself.

 

Another aspect to this is to set yourself up for success. If you are training for a half marathon and you’re only sleeping four hours a night, eating take out a lot and generally not taking care of yourself, you are setting yourself up for failure. Do some batch cooking, shut those light blocking curtains and get the rest and refuelling you need to achieve your goals.

 

Break down your goals

Often, goals can’t be met because they’re too ambitious. As we begin to fail to achieve them, we give up. But dropping your resolutions altogether isn’t the best option. Instead, break down your goals into more manageable pieces. For example, if your goal is to increase your visits to the gym for your FIT36® workouts from once a week to four times a week but you just haven’t been getting there, don’t give up! Instead, start slower by increasing to twice a week! As a bonus, achieving a goal has the effect of motivating you to continue achieving!

 

Celebrate any successes

Another element of motivation is looking at the positive and celebrating your successes! This is where it helps to break down large goals into smaller parts. As you achieve a milestone, you can celebrate it and move on to the next level. Anything and everything you can do to increase your motivation to continue is valuable.

 

Work with a buddy

Motivation also comes from working on resolutions or goals with support from someone else. This creates accountability, which makes it a lot harder for you to cheat or skip out on your resolutions!

 

If your goal is to lose some weight, for example, you will be more motivated to keep at it if you have a friend or family member who is doing the same thing, at the same time. You can keep each other going when it gets a little harder and be accountable to one another the rest of the time!
